CRATE MAKER / PACKER A (Full Time)

Summary
Perform a variety of complex carpentry, packing, and material moving duties including calculating, measuring, weighing, and labeling parts and materials. Fabricate a wide assortment of wooden crates and pack machinery, vehicles, service spares/disassembled aircraft or other large or odd shaped products for foreign and domestic shipment. Operate forklift, to move crates and ensure contents arrive at destination without damage. Use tools and equipment such as saws, air nailers, stencil machine, scales, calculator, cutting knives, and adjustable measuring instruments. Work independently or with minimal direction from Lead Person
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Work from and follow process specifications, work orders, travelers, station paperwork, blueprints, rework/rejection tags, shipping notices, schedules, and verbal/written instruction.
Inspect product to determine size and shape of container, materials to be used, and type of supports and braces to be used.
Lay out dimensions on materials with ruler, measuring tape, and pencil. Saw materials to size. Dismantle aircraft or subassemblies.
Place product in container. Bolt, shore, and secure heavy pieces to bottom of container or skid.
Wrap and pad product with packing material.
Build crate around large or odd shaped articles. Nail cover on crate.
Wrap and tighten metal bands around crate.
Attach identification labels or stencils containing information such as shipping destination, weight, and type of product contained on crate.
Operate mailing machine.
Repair broken crates.
Count items to be packed to ensure compliance with shipping orders.
Weigh loaded crate.
Move container to shipping area and move lumber, paper, and other wrapping supplies to crating area.
Maintain necessary records and reports.
Scrutinize every facet of job and report improper operation, faulty equipment, defective materials, and unusual conditions to Lead Person.
Requires the use of and ownership of basic tools and various hand tools as specified by departmental tool list.
Perform housekeeping chores as department requirements dictate.

Education and Experience
Requires the use of acquired knowledge, high school diploma or GED, and one to three years’ related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills
Ability to communicate effectively with all internal and external customers in both written and oral form.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to perform the duties of the job applying basic mathematics such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Forklift certification.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; and frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, and airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.
