Collins Aerospace

Collins Aerospace, an RTX company, is a leader in technologically advanced and intelligent solutions for the global aerospace and defense industry. Collins Aerospace has the capabilities, comprehensive portfolio, and expertise to solve customers’ toughest challenges and to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global spanet.

Collins Aerospace – Applied Research and Technology

The Applied Research and Technology (https://www.collinsaerospace.com/ART) team is a global technology and open innovation resource within Collins Aerospace working on mission-critical projects that push the boundaries of what technology can do. We work on the cutting edge, redefining our industry with innovative partners, government and academia to research and advance transformative technologies that can create a safer, more connected, and sustainable world.

ART Cyber and Real-Time Systems Team

The Cyber & Real-Time Systems team, geographically distributed across the US, Ireland, and Italy, aims at developing novel technologies for embedded systems in connected products and aviation systems to assure the security, safety, and operational continuity of our customers. Solutions designed by the team constitute enablers for disruptive transformation in the aviation sector, ranging from high-performance embedded computing environments, to programmable very high-speed avionics network, custom System on Chip (SoC) fostering auditability, monitoring, performance prediction and certifiability.

Job Summary

Collins Aerospace ART seeks candidates with proven research experience in cybersecurity to join the Cyber & Real-Time Systems team for its sites in Cork (Ireland) and Cedar Rapids (Iowa, U.S.). The successful candidate will need to prove their strong mix of academic research and applied experience in design, simulation and verification of computer architecture (at system, device and processor level), analysis and performance evaluation of heterogeneous Multi-Processor System on Chips (MPSoCs) for on-board computing systems and their related networks, and a passion for applying these skills within the connected aerospace domain.

The candidate must possess and demonstrate:

  • Outstanding track records, experience using and implementing proof-of-concept demonstrators for mixed criticality embedded and real-time systems, DAL-A/C applications, on mid/low processing solutions, heterogeneous embedded, GPUs, multicore platforms or unconventional computing architectures.
  • Strong intellectual curiosity, ingenuity, and integrity.
  • Enthusiasm and passion to learn.
  • Self-organization and excellent interpersonal, leadership and communication skills to work in international teams.
  • Willing to champion and challenge new technical ideas.
  • Able to adapt to new challenges and go beyond the original field of expertise.
  • Able to partner with universities, government agencies, national labs, and professional organizations to meet organizational objectives within time and budget constraints.
  • Knowledge of certification standards for safety critical airborne hardware & software systems in the aerospace domain (CAST-32A, DO-178C and DO-254) is highly desirable but not essential.

The person in this role should be self-motivated, serving as a key contributor to the research and implementation of new software and embedded technologies for connected aircraft and critical ground systems. Research projects may include multi-level computing systems, secure networking, formal verification, and advanced software analysis tools.  As part of our team, candidates will have the opportunity to significantly contribute to new research we are performing in cyber physical system domain.

This is a research-focused role. Key Responsibilities:

  • Definition, design and development of safe and secure fully auditable IP blocks, low-level software and solutions for mid- to low- end processing platform use cases that are usable across different Collins products ranging from FPGAs to ASIC, and custom System-on-Chip (SoC) solutions.
  • Improve run-time contention analysis and deterministic behavior in heterogeneous multi core systems to support safety workload and ease the certification process in face of modern and future aviation applications running on bare metal, Hypervisors or RTOS environments.
  • Serve as a key technical contributor for complex software development projects using languages such as C/C++, Java, Python, Rust, and others.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and competitive advantage to a multidisciplinary and international team of experts and work on design, analysis, simulation, development and/or verification of cyber-security solutions in the broad ICT domain in high assurance and security-critical systems.
  • Participate in teams of hardware, software, and systems engineers to develop, integrate, and evaluate key new software technologies.
  • Contribute towards technical strategy and business development to a growing research agenda for future aerospace systems within the Collins Aerospace applied research and technology community.
  • Execute R&D activities within an international research community, including technology development within collaborative EU research projects (e.g., Horizon Europe, SESAR, Clean Sky).

The ideal candidate must possess a PhD in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering and must demonstrate outstanding previous embedded systems experience. Less experienced candidates are also encouraged to apply and will be evaluated accordingly. At least a master’s degree in computer science or engineering with a strong understanding of operating systems, architecture and networking fundamentals is required.
