STS Technical Services is hiring a Principal Structural Design Engineer to support our client’s engineering operations in Aiken, South Carolina. This is a senior-level opportunity for a licensed professional with deep structural engineering expertise and a proven track record of leading multidisciplinary teams on large, complex projects.
Position Summary:
As a Principal Structural Design Engineer, you will serve as a technical leader, guiding engineering design efforts across all phases of execution. Your work will directly influence project safety, quality, and performance outcomes. You’ll act as a key liaison between stakeholders, ensuring structural integrity while aligning with regulatory requirements, budget, and schedule.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as Supervising Lead under the guidance of the Discipline Lead Engineer
- Provide technical direction to engineering and design teams
- Solve complex engineering problems with minimal oversight
- Develop and review technical project specifications and design criteria
- Conduct advanced structural analyses and validate results
- Select appropriate materials, equipment, and systems based on project requirements
- Coordinate technical deliverables with clients, vendors, and internal teams
- Ensure work adheres to project quality standards and meets budget and timeline constraints
- Contribute to project planning through estimates, staffing forecasts, and reporting
- Analyze and report on material quantities, scope changes, and engineering progress
- Support procurement with bid evaluations and vendor document reviews
- Address field inquiries and manage technical aspects of construction changes
Minimum Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship required
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
- 15+ years of relevant structural engineering experience
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license
- Expertise in structural codes and standards (local, state, and federal)
- Proficiency in 3D modeling and 2D CADD tools in multi-discipline environments
- Hands-on experience with engineering software, including STAAD, STAADPro, RISA-3D, and Mathcad
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex technical issues and meet critical deadlines
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Familiarity with federal regulatory frameworks and quality assurance procedures
- EPC project experience in high-risk or regulated industries
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience designing structural systems under ASME NQA-1 standards
- Familiarity with seismic, wind, and dynamic load analysis
- Intermediate knowledge of blast-resistant structural design
- Background in nuclear, pharmaceutical, biotech, or DOE facility design
- Field experience supporting construction and engineering integration
- Familiarity with material cost drivers and supply chain constraints
- Proven leadership in full project lifecycle delivery, from initiation to close-out
